We are looking for an experienced Enterprise Architect to join our Tech Strategy & Architecture tīma (team) and be responsible for developing enterprise architectures that meet our strategic ambitions for data.

We sat down with our Head of Architecture, Colleague Enablement & Data and they let us know the following about the tūranga.

What projects / mahi will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?

Actively participating in the broader practice of Technology Strategy & Architecture at BNZ:

  • BNZ Technology Strategy, with a specific focus on transitioning to our target architecture for Enterprise Data and Analytics; Customer Engagement; and Marketing and Campaign Management platforms
  • Enterprise Architecture rituals and cycles; enterprise portfolio planning aligned to simplification and modernisation road maps and enterprise architecture KPIs and maturity
  • Our Enterprise Data change programme with a focus on simplifcation, modernisation, and data products
  • Our Customer Engagement and Marketing change programme with a focus on maturing these capabilities
  • You will be focusing on maturing our enterprise capability model (BIAN and TRM, in our EAM) and specifically our enterprise data view point for the bank. This includes working with our engineering practice to providing guidance and standards across technology delivery for operational data. You will also be providing guidance and developing standards with our Digital, Data & Analytics business unit and related data and analytics platforms delivery domain to hydrate our analytics platforms and ensure ongoing fitness for purpose into the future ensuring our data ecosystem (spanning operational and analytical concerns) is fit for enabling the use of AI/ML.


What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

BNZ requires enterprise architecture support to ensure we can meet our strategic ambitions for data, including ensuring governance, privacy, ethics and protection. There are three key areas:

  • We are in the process of hydrating our enterprise analytics data platform (BNZ Data Hub), developing a road map that takes us towards a data mesh aligned architecture with the development of data products and decommissioning a decades-old legacy.
  • We are maturing and augmenting the eco-system around our customer decision hub as well automation of our marketing and campaign management capabilities
  • We are also embracing AI/ML to align and drive our data-powered future whilst ensuring compliance with our regulatory and policy requirements.


What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

Scope breadth, for example, we need you to:

  • Ensure data and AI/ML governance, privacy and security is at the forefront with centrally-managed guidelines, standards and patterns that determine how domain data will be categorised, managed, discovered and accessed. i.e. data contracts, schemas etc.
  • Help articulate the pathway to simplified and modernised target states, identifying capability and capacity gaps and incremental steps to achieve business outcomes.
  • Build on existing the reference architectures, contribute to the data and analytics target architecture, finalise the customer engagement target architecture and develop the marketing and campaign management target architecture.
  • Further develop target state architecture and patterns for analytical and operational planes.
  • Highlight implications for AI/ML.
  • Provide input as required to the architectural development of our Customer data assets - this is already underway and has separate oversight due to the different architecture concerns in operational vs analytical environments.


Why did the last person leave this tūranga?

Our incumbent is still in the team but has moved to a new role running our innovation team. You will be working alongside our lead enterprise architect for data and analytics, as well as leading out on the customer engagement and marketing and campaign management domains.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this tūranga?

We're looking for someone who has strengths in big picture thinking, communication (verbal and written) and negotiation skills. You will have the ability to "read the room", understand that being a trusted advisor doesn't always mean your advice will be taken, and you can deal with that appropriately.

You will also need to be comfortable engaging with a wide and diverse array of stakeholders from senior managers and executives through to technical specialists.
