Job Description

Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

We have a vacancy for a permanent position for a Technical Adviser to join our Approvals team. The Approvals team exists within the New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) business unit of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

This role is for you if you are passionate about:

  • empowering primary sector businesses to manage food safety risks and facilitating access to overseas markets
  • building relationships and engaging with a wide range of diverse stakeholders within the Ministry for Primary Industries, across Government, local councils and across the primary sector especially businesses regulated under the Animal Products Act 1999, Food Act 2014 and Wine Act 2003 (food safety legislation)
  • having the freedom to apply yourself and being exposed to a wide range of career opportunities.

MPI regulates businesses processing animal material, animal products, wine and organic food products for trade and export. These businesses are required to register with MPI in order to operate. MPI also co-regulates non-animal product food sector businesses with local councils and specified high risk businesses in this category are required to be registered with MPI. As a technical adviser, your primary responsibility is to carry out the technical assessment of registration applications and recommend the final decision to the relevant decision maker.

The role also includes:

  • providing technical advice to businesses and other stakeholders and managing relationships
  • working closely with our Operations Team regarding the management of applications
  • contributing to projects and policy development
  • supporting the Team Manager Appraisals and colleagues in the management of workload.

Mōu - About You

This role would suit someone who has some knowledge and/or experience of food safety legislation, food safety regulatory frameworks, knowledge of the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) or experience working in a HACCP environment. You would ideally be organised and have great time management skills, love working with and managing stakeholders and be a great communicator. You would also have the ability to work autonomously with a proactive approach.

A degree in Food Science or Food Technology and experience working in a primary sector production or processing business is desirable.

Full training and support will be provided. The right person will also have potential to grow and develop their career in several pathways available within MPI.

You do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

You will join a small but diverse and agile team of six technical kaimahi (primarily Wellington based) and a team manager (Palmerston North based) with extensive food safety regulatory background. We work cohesively together through many functions and activities, including approval activities, to support primary sector businesses in managing risks and in accessing new overseas markets.

Mō te Manatū Ahu Matua - About MPI

Our role includes seizing export opportunities for our food and fibre sector, improving sector productivity, ensuring the food we produce is safe, increasing sustainable resource use, and protecting New Zealand from biological risk.
