About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

This role is accountable for leading the strategic allocation and prioritisation of resources to support digital deliverables. It also involves developing project management frameworks, methodologies, tools, and appropriately scaled templates to enhance efficiency. Additionally, the position plays a key role in digital investment planning, collaborating closely with Business Technology Information Services (BTIS) Business Partners to ensure a seamless pipeline from discovery to delivery.

Collaborating closely with the BA Capability Lead, this individual will oversee a team of project managers. They will also be responsible for managing all processes, best practices, and ensuring compliance with the digital project framework.

This digital office supports a diverse range of projects, varying in scale and complexity. The role offers a high level of autonomy, allowing the individual to shape it to their strengths. It's a great stepping stone for someone looking to lead a dynamic team and make a broad, meaningful impact. Examples of some of our work? A new Fishing Rules app is currently in development in collaboration with Fisheries New Zealand. There is a project underway to integrate laboratory systems with Biosecurity New Zealand.

This role offers a clear understanding of the work being done and its direct impact on the lives of New Zealanders.

About You - Mōu

To be successful in this role, you'll have significant experience managing digital projects or programmes in a large and complex organisation. You will also have leadership experience in the digital PM workspace, specifically, within a Government Department.

In addition to the above, we are seeking an applicant with:

  • Relevant experience in comparable ICT Project Management roles, ideally gained in large, complex environments with a mix of application and infrastructure projects.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills (senior leadership, technical subject matter experts, business subject matter experts, vendors/suppliers/partners)
  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal)
  • Proven leadership skills, with a focus on leading project teams to successful outcomes
  • Project management qualification/certification ideal


About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū

The role of Business Technology & Information Services (BT&IS) is to enable business technology solutions and deliver high-quality, cost-effective information & technology services to Ministry staff and external stakeholders. The Digital Portfolio Office is within BT&IS.
