Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity

Downer NZ holds a long-term Asset Management and Facilities Management contract with the Department of Corrections and the Ministry of Justice. Downer provide enhanced and extended scope of works and implement new processes to ensure that all facilitates are well managed and maintained. We are currently seeking a Facilities Trade Assistant to join our team at the Northland Region Corrections Facility. This position is full time, with a guaranteed min 40 hours per week.

Prisons are sometimes challenging work environments, so you must be confident and able to conduct yourself professionally at all times. You will also understand the 24/7 nature of a prison site and be prepared to sometimes manage jobs and situations after hours.

A bit about the role

This is a hands-on role which will be based predominantly on the field and responsible for on-site installation. Duties include but not limited to.

  • Prioritize Zero Harm in all activities.
  • Operate under the guidance of designated leaders for service and project delivery.
  • Adhere to work parameters such as time, materials, costs, and resources.
  • Foster strong customer relationships through positive interactions and value-added activities.
  • Assist skilled tradespeople in maintenance, repairs, and project work efficiently.
  • Complete tasks in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Undertake assigned tasks as directed by the Site Manager or Team Leader.
  • Support risk management and event mitigation guidelines.
  • Escort authorized personnel as needed and ensure efficient coordination of assigned work.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about going the extra mile! You are motivated and ready for the opportunity to take on maintenance work to achieve a high standard performance. You will also bring with you:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Trade Assistant role or similar.
  • Holds a Manual Class 1 Driver's License and is literate in completing job-related documentation.
  • Capable of planning and executing jobs independently, including equipment maintenance.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labour tasks effectively.
  • Flexible in adapting to different environments and changing priorities, with teamwork capabilities.
  • Possesses technical skills with basic hand and power tools, demonstrating self-motivation and a proactive attitude.
