Job Description

Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

We are seeking two Senior Policy Analysts to join the Animal Sector Policy and Forestry Sector Policy teams in the Primary Sector Policy directorate within MPI's Policy & Trade business unit.

The Primary Sector Policy directorate provides high-quality strategic policy advice and thought leadership to support our sectors to flourish. We work across MPI, with wider government, the primary sectors and Māori interests to support economic prosperity, and environmental and social sustainability.

Senior Policy Analyst, Animal Sector Policy:

The Animal Sector Policy team provides analysis and advice on the performance of New Zealand's animal-based primary sectors with a focus on our larger sectors - meat, dairy and wool. We work across the range of issues and opportunities facing these sectors to support their economic growth for the benefit of New Zealand.

We are seeking an experienced senior policy analyst to take a lead role on a significant regulatory review. The focus of this role will be on the upcoming statutorily required review of the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001, which our team is leading. The successful applicant will work alongside the lead adviser to undertake analysis, engage across government and the dairy industry, progress the team's thinking, and draft policy documents. This project will provide an opportunity to build and hone your skills in competition and regulatory economic policy.

Senior Policy Analyst, Forestry Sector Policy

The Forestry Sector Policy team is leading policy development for forestry to support the Government's goals for growing the economy and supporting land use resilience. The work programme is focused on forestry regulatory settings and policy development to support New Zealand's climate goals.

As part of the Forestry Sector Policy team, you will work closely with teams across MPI, other Government agencies, sector companies and industry organisations to ensure that MPI continues to grow and protect our primary sector resources and markets.

Mōu - About You

The ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, a solution focussed approach, and a proven ability to establish and develop effective relationships. You will be comfortable presenting information in a way that can be easily understood by various internal and external audiences.

To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • At least 2 years' experience as a Senior Policy Analyst or in a similar role;
  • An ability and desire to build expertise in economic policy;
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and analytical skills to challenge the status quo;
  • Ability to provide clear, concise, well-reasoned, articulate and practical advice;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the desire to make a positive contribution to the team;
  • Ability to build and maintain a network of relationships with stakeholders across MPI, other Government agencies, and Industry.

You do not need to meet all the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

You will be based in our Wellington office, reporting to either the Manager Forestry Sector Policy or the Manager Animal Sector Policy, and working as part of a small high performing team. These teams have a broad programme of work including strategic and regulatory policy projects and Ministerial servicing.

Both teams like to work collaboratively and actively look for opportunities for people to contribute to work across the team, the wider directorate and MPI so there is ample opportunity to develop and build meaningful internal and external relationships.
