We are looking for applications for a suitably qualified person to take over the full-time role as Skipper on Pacifica



About the role:



This is a 4 on 4 off shift position which requires a versatile, flexible and experienced skipper. You will carry out duties and operations ensuring the supply of mussels to the Havelock Processing Plant for sale and distribution.



Role accountabilities:


  • Operate Pacifica effectively to meet daily operational goals
  • Supervise and lead the crew, ensuring all tasks are completed safely and efficiently
  • Train and mentor crew members on mussel harvesting/seeding operations and safety procedures
  • Conduct regular inspections of the vessel to ensure it is seaworthy and in compliance
  • Report any significant maintenance issues to management
  • Plan and execute mussel farming tasks, such as harvesting, seeding, and maintenance of farming lines
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to vessel operations, safety checks, and regulatory compliance
  • Liaise with the Floating Farm Development Manager regarding daily plans, challenges, and progress, providing updates on vessel performance and crew efficiency
  • Ensure that all farming and harvesting operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner, preventing pollution or damage to the marine environment



What you need to be successful in this role:


  • You will need to have a current SRL/ILM/CLM ticket <24m
  • Current maritime medical and First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to effectively convey information to crew members of varying skill levels, some experience at mediating disagreements or managing tensions among crew members is also ideal. Clear and concise communication with management and other crews/vessels
  • Can motivate and inspire confidence and teamwork in all crew members, able to balance authority with collaboration, knowing when to take control and when to delegate
  • Able to handle long hours, challenging weather, and high-pressure situations, maintaining composure during crises or high stress scenarios
  • An understanding of and interest in overseeing costs for fuel, provisions, and maintenance, ensuring optimal use of vessel, crew and resources
  • Able to adjust plans to accommodate changing preferences, delays, or requirements of both internal and external customers, whilst still ensuring an efficiency focus
  • Understanding of the MFA Environment program and internal sustainability practices and goals
  • Well-versed in handling emergencies like man-overboard situations, engine failures, or first aid. Familiar with Vessel drills and procedures in the event of emergency situations. Strong understanding of Employer and Employee responsibilities under the H&S Act and Sanford internal responsibilities
  • Adaptable and respectful to cultural norms and expectations when working with crew and clients of different cultural norms, practices and dietary requirements
  • Make decisions that prioritise the best interests of shareholders, customers, staff and suppliers. Acting with transparency and accountability, ensuring all actions reflect Sanford's core values and long-term objectives
  • Familiar with the navigation and electronics on board the vessel, including Maxsea, understanding of MDC smart maps, farm plans and GPS locations. Good computer literacy with E-mail, basic office functions and Sanford's own applications
