Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Sport and Recreation are going through an exciting new change where we will be transitioning into a brand new state-of-the-art facility in late 2024. Not only will this be the hub for sport, health and wellbeing on our campus but will also become one of the largest multi-use facilities for sport and recreation in New Zealand. To support the transition to the new facility, Sport and Recreation is looking for an Operations Assistant to join their team.

In this role, you will play a pivotal role in the day-to-day facility operations in our current Sport & Recreation Centres while working closely with the wider Sport and Recreation team and feed into key project workstreams.

This is a hands-on role and the main responsibilities for this role will include:

  • coordinating facility maintenance requirements
  • performing regular health and safety checks
  • act as a health and safety representative on behalf of Sport and Recreation
  • asset management and maintenance scheduling
  • managing key relationships with various university departments and external suppliers
  • support development of and regular review of standard operational procedures
  • exploring new innovations and in-house system improvements


This is an opportunity to work hands-on and help shape the Recreation Centre at our world-class institution while ensuring the safe, efficient, and enjoyable operation of our facilities, programmes, and services.

This is a full-time (37.5 hrs/week), 12 month fixed term position working four week days (afternoon and evenings) and one weekend day.

Remuneration is $50,700 - $57,102 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

The successful candidate will be required to work flexible hours which includes some evenings due to the nature of the business hours and operational requirements that the role entails (i.e supporting maintenance work etc).

You will be a member of a highly motivated team and part of our growth journey as we work towards the transition into our new state-of-the-art facility while we also maintain and operate a number of significant interim facilities.

Our successful applicant will have strong interpersonal skills ensuring exceptional customer service is delivered and communication skills to guarantee solutions are put into action. You will be highly organised to handle a multitude of tasks daily, adaptable when required and have the ability to manage time effectively.

Key skills and attributes we are looking for are:

  • Recreation/sport/fitness specific higher education qualification or trade certification
  • Full (clean) driver’s license
  • 3+ years’ experience working in a similar operations focused role in a fitness or sporting facility/environment or a similar complex operational environment
  • Understanding of Health, Safety, and wellbeing best practice
  • Coordinating stakeholders for high quality delivery outcomes
  • Responsible for complex administration duties
  • Practical general repair skills and/or trade sector experience
  • Capable of adopting new systems and software solutions quickly.
