He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
We’re looking for Wagon Assembly Technicians/Mechanical Engineers to join our newly established assembly team in Dunedin. In this hands-on role, you’ll be responsible for assembling wagons, using tools and machinery, and ensuring every build meets our high safety and quality standards. You’ll be part of a team of skilled professionals, working together to bring KiwiRail’s ambitious plans to life.
What you’ll be doing:
- Assembling and producing wagons in our new Hillside workshop
- Working with tools and machinery to complete mechanical tasks
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving during the assembly process
- Following health and safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment
- Learning and growing as part of KiwiRail’s long-term investment in its people and future

We’re looking for mechanically minded individuals who are keen to learn and work as part of a team.
You’ll need:
- A strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- Good problem-solving skills and confidence working with tools
- A commitment to safety and following procedures
- The ability to work well in a team environment
- Previous experience in a heavy trade, automotive, or mechanical industry (preferred but not required)
- Trade-qualified or non-trade applicants welcome—full training provided
