Are you an experienced legal professional looking to make an impact in a dynamic and fast-paced environment? Rotorua Lakes Council has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and high performing legal practitioner to join our Governance, Strategy and Compliance team!

We require a highly skilled Legal Counsel Manager to guide and assist good decision-making on legal, strategic, commercial and risk management issues to ensure Council achieves organisational priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice and support to Council
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and bylaws
  • Represent council in legal proceedings and negotiations
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts, agreements and other legal documents
  • Develop and implement legal strategies to mitigate risks and support council initiatives
  • Liaise with external legal advisors and stakeholders as necessary


We are looking for a leader who is a superb communicator and team player, has an eye for detail, possesses excellent presentation, persuasion and influencing skills, and a proven ability to plan, organise and achieve results quickly.

You will need energy and enthusiasm and be committed to delivering customer service to the highest level. You will be self-managing as you tackle tasks, and be able to demonstrate you understand people and can lead from the front.

This position demands political sensitivity, discretion and the maturity to deal with demanding situations.
