  • We're offering competitive salary starting from $174,846 to $193,569. depending on experience


Mō te tūnga | About the role

As the Manager of External Monitoring and Reviews, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our organisation takes action on advice and guidance from oversight agencies and other external reviews and enquiries. You will also be responsible for monitoring progress against these reviews and recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership: Provide leadership for Oranga Tamariki's responsibilities and accountabilities to Oversight Monitoring agencies.
  • Accountability: Ensure clear accountability for actions arising from recommendations by oversight agencies, including the oversight of Ombudsman responses.
  • Management: Lead management responses to reviews by external agencies and Oranga Tamariki, clearly defining actions and monitoring progress.
  • Royal Commission Response: Lead Oranga Tamariki's response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in State Care, including actions required from their report and recommendations.
  • Corporate Leadership: Focus on corporate leadership rather than relationship management, overseeing a team of 8 direct reports
  • Organisational Skills: Highly organised, capable of developing and maintaining a comprehensive work programme, and adept at juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.


This role is based in our Wellington office. Due to the operational requirements and dynamic nature of the role, it will be beneficial for you to have the close support of the team around you. Candidates for this role are required to already be based in Wellington or be willing to relocate to Wellington for this opportunity.

We are looking for a strong leader who thrives in a corporate environment, adept at supporting feedback and reporting mechanisms. This is a transactional role where you will manage incoming and outgoing tasks efficiently.

Ideal candidate for this role will have proven experience in the following:

  • Skilled in leading diverse teams, motivating and inspiring team members to grow professionally
  • Expertise in managing complex programmes
  • Strong background in developing and implementing policies
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee work programmes, ensuring priorities are met and risks are managed effectively
  • Experience providing high-quality operational and strategic advice to senior leaders
  • Proficient in managing relationships with key stakeholders, including Ministers and other government agencies
  • In-depth knowledge of government processes, advising on Cabinet procedures, and building organisational capability
