He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions department is offering an exciting opportunity for a Waste Planning Advisor to play a key role in shaping a sustainable future for Auckland. In this critical position, you’ll be at the forefront of driving Auckland’s vision to become Zero Waste by 2040. You’ll manage vital relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including elected members, mana whenua, community groups, and the waste sector, ensuring that sustainability is woven into every decision and project.

In this role, you'll use your relationship development and data analysis skills to support and develop key waste minimisation projects. You’ll provide technical advice and help implement the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP), focusing on practical solutions. Your work will directly support the city’s sustainability goals, ensuring a more resource-efficient and eco-friendly future.

You can expect to work on:

  • Promote a shift in narratives on construction and demolition (C&D) waste minimisation by advocating, brokering, and communicating at a leadership level, aligning with the objectives of the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP).
  • Proactively contribute to the implementation of the WMMP, Waste Bylaw, strategies, operational plans, procurement, programmes and projects.
  • Offer subject matter expertise on waste management and minimisation, with a focus on C&D waste, to both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring effective solutions and strategies.
  • Working across Waste Planning and Community WasteWise teams to deliver and manage Local board or similar projects..
  • Contribute to the collection, analysis, and reporting of waste data, helping to track progress and inform future strategies.

The salary ranging for this role is between $85,000 - $90,000

You will have experience in a multi-disciplinary environment, including the waste sector and/or a relevant tertiary degree. We are looking for a strong communicator who builds strong relationships. You will have experience in similar roles within large, complex, and potentially political organisations.

We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, ensuring collaboration and successful outcomes.
  • Strong report writing, technical data and analytical skills will be essential to success, and you will be able to present information with credibility and authority in formal settings.
  • Proven ability to work independently, tackle challenges, and deliver practical solutions to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Excellent planning, time management, and organisational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
