He angitūtanga: The opportunity
This critical role is your chance to make a real difference by managing some of Auckland’s most iconic and cherished green spaces, including the Auckland Botanic Gardens, Auckland Domain/Wintergardens, and a newly acquitted future satellite Botanic Garden on the North Shore.

In this influential position, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of these important destinations. You’ll provide clear strategic direction, lead a high-performing team, cultivate strong partnerships and relationships, and drive financial sustainability. Most of all you will lead through Manaakitanga and authenticity and by provide support by nourishing our team culture.

What you can expect to work on:

  • Lead with purpose and vision to continuously elevate the Auckland Botanic Gardens, Domain Winter Gardens, and Platt Arboretum, delivering transformative visitor experiences and advancing core objectives.
  • Drive operational excellence in education, conservation, and research to ensure a lasting connection between people and plants.
  • Take charge of prudent financial management, effectively monitoring expenditure, managing budgets, and optimizing revenue to support long-term success.
  • Develop and nurture sustainable partnerships that empower key projects and foster community engagement, including high-profile events.
  • Build and sustain meaningful relationships with Mana Whenua, grounded in mutual respect and shared values.


This role has a remuneration range of $150,000 - $160,000

He kōrero mōu: About you
This role requires experience at least 10 years working in botanic gardens or appropriate related field with 10 years in a people leader role or demonstrated leadership space. You will have experience in similar roles within large, complex, and potentially political organisations.

We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

  • A relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree (not necessarily in horticulture or botany) that complements your practical and leadership experience.
  • A broad understanding of the role of contemporary botanic gardens in education, conservation, and community engagement.
  • Proven success in building strong, collaborative relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, both internal and external, creating mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • A thorough understanding of Tangata whenua, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and a working knowledge of tikanga and Te Reo
