He angitūtanga: The Opportunity
Auckland Council is seeking an Animal and Customer Care Officer to join a newly created team in the Animal Management Unit. In this role, you'll be responsible for transporting dogs across Auckland for desexing appointments, ensuring their safety and humane handling. You'll coordinate bookings with dog owners, provide pre- and post-operative care advice, and support the veterinary team with the smooth running of the clinic. This is a full-time fixed term role until April 2026. Location is in Henderson Animal Shelter.

He kōrero mōu: About You
You are an experienced and compassionate animal handler with excellent communication skills. With at least 3 years of experience in animal care or transport, you are adept at managing difficult or aggressive animals safely and humanely. You have strong organisational skills, the ability to handle multiple tasks, and a proactive approach to your work. You are committed to animal welfare and excited to be part of a supportive, dynamic team working for the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely transport dogs to and from desexing appointments across Auckland.
  • Coordinate with dog owners to schedule appointments and provide care advice.
  • Handle and transport aggressive or difficult dogs safely and humanely.
  • Assist the veterinary team with tasks such as cleaning, dog handling and booking management.
  • Ensure the transport vehicle is clean and well-maintained.
  • Support the Animal Management Unit with fieldwork and shelter initiatives.
  • Participate in community outreach and educational programs.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience handling and transporting animals, particularly dogs.
  • Ability to manage difficult or aggressive animals safely and humanely.
  • Compassionate and patient approach to animal care.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise care advice to pet owners.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to handle challenging situations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage conflict and keep customers informed of their rights and obligations.


Job Requirements:

  • Previous experience in animal care, handling, or transport (3+ years preferred).
  • Full driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Qualifications in animal care or a related field are a plus.
  • Strong organisational and multitasking abilities.
  • Knowledge of animal control, animal welfare, and animal husbandry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
