He angitūtanga: The opportunity
The Engineering, Assets and Technical Advisory Department (EATA) plays a crucial role in supporting resilient infrastructure development and networks. We incorporate resilient thinking into all built environment plans, asset management and design standards. Our work spans managing coastal asset renewals, closed landfill operations & maintenance, contaminated land, natural hazard risk assessment, structural, geotechnical, civil and coastal engineering, asset management, contract management, and environmental monitoring and evaluation. Ultimately providing structural, geotechnical, civil, and coastal engineering input for Council and the development of design standards for Auckland.

EATA is a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, planners, asset managers, project, and contract managers. We collaborate across the Council family to deliver infrastructure projects while providing technical advisory and subject matter expert support. Our work is deeply rooted in our enduring partnership with mana whenua, ensuring it is reflected in our work programming, prioritisation, design, and physical works delivery.

Auckland Council is one of Engineering NZ’s Professional Development Partners who demonstrate a strong commitment to developing their engineering staff. As a graduate engineer, you will play a crucial role in project delivery as a key team member. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing successful infrastructure project outcomes.
  • Developing new technical/engineering standards and guidelines. These resources will be utilised by the NZ engineering community in designing and constructing horizontal engineering infrastructure. An impressive opportunity to gain recognition for being part of the team developing engineering standards which will further enhance your career pathway towards attaining CPEng.
  • Providing specialist design and engineering advice, and technical support for Council-group projects and consenting activities in the geotechnical, coastal, civil, and structural engineering fields


Throughout our 2-year graduate programme, an Engineering New Zealand Accredited mentor will support you to eventually attain the competencies required for Chartered Engineering Status through Engineering New Zealand.

We are looking for a graduate who embodies a strong willingness to learn and thrives in a collaborative environment. You will have exceptional attention to detail and communication skills, both written and verbal. Being organised and possessing strong analytical skills are crucial, as is the ability to be adaptable in a dynamic work setting. Proficiency in report writing and the ability to present information to a diverse audience are also key attributes we value.

To be eligible to apply, you must have the following:

  • Minimum of a relevant bachelor’s degree completed January 2024 – January 2026
  • Have a minimum valid NZ restricted driver’s license before February 2026
