  • 1x Fixed-term fulltime position available, contract till June 2026!!
  • Preferably Wellington based but open to other locations
  • We're offering a competitive salary starting from $125,926 to $139,459, depending on experience


Mō te tūnga | About the role

As Lead Advisor, you will support the development of the claims service, provide subject matter expertise to the service design, share insights from claims casework to inform the development of policy and practice, and provide advice to the leadership team and key stakeholders. You will also line manage a team of senior advisors undertaking claims casework and provide supervision to those involved. This role is central to ensuring a kind and caring response which supports a journey of healing in addressing the impacts of abuse.

A key responsibility is to ensure the support is child-centric. This involves promoting the wellbeing of children and to reflect their views in all claims activities. The role requires a considered and calm approach during conversations about difficult experiences.

The role will include providing expert knowledge and guidance to inform assessments. It also requires strong advocacy on behalf of individuals in promoting their needs to enable the delivery of a suite of responses.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring

Key requirements of the role include:

  • Full registration with New Zealand's Social Work Registration Board (SWRB)
  • A social worker qualification recognised by the SWRB
  • A clean, current driver's licence is essential and a willingness to drive the Ministry's vehicles.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of claims development work and claims casework and understanding of complexities of harm experienced by children in care.
  • Experience in reviewing social work practice.
  • Experience in working with children and their families/whānau and with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, in particular Māori and Pacific Peoples.
  • Sound knowledge of Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, the Children's Act 2014 and other relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of child, adolescent, and human development.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture
