IDEA Services supports people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy great lives as part of their communities. If you are looking for a job where you can build a long-term career and where no two days are the same, this is the job for you!
Our service in Beach Haven is a 24/7 service. There will be 2 - 4 individuals living in the home - both of Korean and NZ European descent. Behaviours that challenge can be displayed and each individual will have an intellectual disability and Autism Spectrum Diagnosis or other dual disability diagnosis.
As a support worker in this service you will need to value and respect both Korean and NZ culture - there will be a need for you to support them to make both Korean and NZ food and to be able to communicate with them and families in Korean and English. You need to be active as those we support enjoy going out for activities and getting involved in the community.
We are looking for resilient people, with calm natures and confidence in dealing with behaviours that challenge to join our culturally based team. You will have the ability to deal with the unexpected daily. Your role will be to help them gain independence so that they can make their own choices, be part of their community, and live a fulfilling life.
What does the job involve?
- As a support worker you will support them to attend different activities daily in the community.
- You will be supporting people to grow their independence and learn skills for daily living (e.g. using public transport, getting a job, manage money, cook a korean meal).
- Supporting people with their emotional regulation skills - part of what you do each day will be helping them to recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm and react safely to this
- Being able to work on individual needs, supporting people with daily activities such as shopping, cleaning, showering and administering medication.
- Helping people with their interests and hobbies (e.g. going to the park or beach, swimming, participating in sport, doing art and crafts).
- Supporting them to plan and achieve their goals and make decisions and choices.
- Ensuring they connect with the Korean community.
- Helping them to stay healthy and make positive choices about their lifestyle.
