The NZ Police Finance function provides several critical services required to enable the success of our organisation. This ranges from ensuring our staff and suppliers are paid, ensuring compliance with public sector legislation, standards, and expectations, maintaining a “Licence to operate” and providing strategic and practical financial advice to decision makers to ensure we operate within our budgets and deliver value for money.



The Business Accountant is an internal finance consultant aligned to the New Zealand Police business portfolios.



The position reports to a Senior Finance Business Partner and is responsible for the provision of trusted, insightful, and comprehensive financial advice and support to the assigned budget holders within the portfolios Business Group. For this reason, our Business Accountants must be a provisional member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CAANZ) and working towards full membership.



Business Accountants are assigned a business unit portfolio as well as other relevant projects. There is an expectation that Business Accountants will rotate portfolios as necessary to support the business. This strengthens Finances knowledge across the organisation and allows professional and personal development opportunities.





Key Accountabilities:

  • Understand the NZP and portfolio’s key business drivers, cost drivers, pressures and risks using this knowledge to provide proactive, relevant, and integrated business and financial advice to business units
  • Ensure the provision of timely and accurate information and business support to assist financial and operational decision-making and management
  • Provide sound analysis and options, informing, and influencing decision making and presenting analysis to assess, support or challenge key decisions
  • Participate in portfolio business planning as a trusted advisor to portfolio groups.
  • Support the delivery of accurate and effective financial budgeting and forecasting.
  • Lead/contribute to continuous improvement work programme

  • Strong financial acumen, numerical reasoning and applications of financial concepts and principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (including presentation skills).
  • Working knowledge of SAP or similar ERP systems
  • A good understanding of relevant legislation and standards including Public Finance Act and PBE IPSAS
  • A proven ability to use data and insights to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, to influence and guide organisational decision making.
  • Able to manage time, priorities and responsibilities including ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.

Utu ā-tau | Salary



This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $95,057 and $100,626 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
