THE OPPORTUNITY:

Here's an opportunity to be a key part of NZ Herald and Viva’s lifestyle coverage as the Deputy Desk Editor - Lifestyle. You will assist the Desk Editor – Lifestyle and Managing Editor – Lifestyle to shape the digital lifestyle content we offer across various domains such as fashion, food, arts, culture, entertainment, home, travel, wellness and more. You will help to support a team of journalists to create high-quality multimedia content that grows our audience and subscriber base.

HOW YOU'LL DO IT:

  • Support the desk editor and managing editor to set the strategic direction for digital premium and free lifestyle content across four verticals – Lifestyle, Entertainment, Viva and Travel
  • Help the team in creating engaging content, deeper journalism, exclusive high-profile interviews, and comprehensive coverage of major events. Your team's content will be marked by quality and trust, attracting and retaining our valued subscribers.
  • Help to develop and implement effective content strategies based on a deep understanding of the target audience and the business' commercial needs. Use analytics and insights and monitor competitors to help achieve this.
  • Show outstanding news judgement and help lead, coach, mentor and inspire your team to generate unique, compelling content of a high standard.
  • Help with planning, scheduling and overseeing the execution of complex content projects, like Viva’s Top 60 Restaurant Awards, NZ Fashion Week, Travel’s Best Beach campaign and more
  • Maintain strong communication and collaboration with other teams across NZME to ensure seamless, integrated news coverage.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including PRs, publicists, talent managers, agents etc, to ensure the Herald and Viva can secure agenda-setting, exclusive stories relevant to our audiences
  • Have a sharp eye for detail and edit and sub content to ensure factual accuracy, clarity and spelling/grammatical errors are captured.
  • Support the newsroom’s editorial mission, promoting a culture of excellence, accuracy, and trust.
  • Have a proactive, can-do attitude and provide a safe pair of hands to support senior leaders
  • Bring new ideas and opportunities to the table, with the skills and expertise to help bring them to life

ABOUT YOU:

  • You have the ability to stay calm under pressure, managing multiple tasks and changing priorities with ease.
  • With a keen understanding of audience needs, you use data to tailor content that not only informs but captivates.
  • You possess excellent communication skills and are able to confidently liaise with stakeholders inside and outside the organisation while maintaining strong relationships across the newsroom.
  • You are committed to continuous learning and professional development, actively seeking opportunities to grow and adapt in an ever-evolving media landscape.
  • You have the ability to pivot quickly to meet appropriate, urgent requests from other managers.
  • You are able to help lead and support projects to further the business.
