Job Description

The Senior Fund Writer will play a pivotal role in securing funding to support Tiaki Taonga Trust Wai 262’s mission, focusing on protecting Māori flora and fauna, intellectual property rights, and advancing the principles of He Wakaputanga 1835, Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840, and Tino Rangatiratanga. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer with proven success in grant writing, proposal development, and fundraising strategy within the non-profit sector.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Grant and Proposal Writing:
o Research, identify, and evaluate funding opportunities from government agencies,
foundations, corporations, and international bodies.
o Develop compelling grant proposals, funding applications, and concept notes
tailored to specific donor guidelines.
o Draft persuasive narratives that align with the Trust’s strategic objectives,
emphasizing Māori rights, Tikanga Lore, and environmental conservation.

2. Fundraising Strategy Development:
o Collaborate with the Executive Director to create and implement comprehensive
fundraising strategies.
o Analyse funding trends, donor behaviours, and grant cycles to optimize fundraising
efforts.

3. Donor Engagement and Relationship Management:
o Build and maintain relationships with key donors, funding bodies, and stakeholders.
o Prepare reports, updates, and presentations to keep funders informed about project
outcomes and impacts.

4. Research and Analysis:
o Conduct in-depth research on potential funding sources, including philanthropic
foundations, international donors, and crowdfunding platforms.
o Analyse grant outcomes to inform future funding strategies.

5. Compliance and Reporting:
o Ensure all grant proposals meet compliance requirements and align with donor
priorities.
o Prepare timely and accurate grant reports, including financial summaries and impact
assessments.

6. Collaboration and Capacity Building:
o Work closely with project managers, researchers, and communication teams to
gather relevant data and success stories.
o Mentor junior fundraising staff and contribute to capacity-building initiatives within
the Trust.

Key Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Non-Profit Management, Public Policy, or related fields (Master’s preferred).
 Minimum of 5-7 years of professional grant writing and fundraising experience.
 Proven track record of securing significant funding from diverse sources.
 Strong understanding of Māori rights, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Tino Rangatiratanga, and Tikanga Lore.
 Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences.
 Strong research, analytical, and project management skills.
 Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
 Proficiency in fundraising databases, CRM systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Skills:
 Knowledge of environmental conservation, indigenous rights, and international funding
mechanisms.
 Experience with crowdfunding platforms and digital fundraising strategies.
 Familiarity with New Zealand’s legal frameworks related to Māori intellectual property and flora and fauna claims.
