Job Description

Are you passionate about animal welfare and community safety? Do you have a knack for handling animals with care and professionalism? The Far North District Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Animal Management Officer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the well-being of animals within our community, enforcing local animal control laws, and providing education and support to residents.

Te Wero – The Challenge

Your duties as an Animal Management Officer will be to:

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, such as the Dog Control Act 1996 and Impounding Act 1955.
  • Respond to complaints, enquiries, and requests related to animal management.
  • Apply operational procedures for pound operations, dog attack investigations, and more.
  • Conduct investigations, prepare reports, and manage infringement systems.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in animal handling and welfare practices.
  • Participate in after-hours roster duties.
  • Adhere to Council’s Health & Safety plans and procedures.
  • Provide evidence in court and appear as a witness or investigating officer.
  • Maintain comprehensive records and update documentation and databases.
  • Manage the disposal or auction of impounded animals in accordance with legislation and Council policies.
  • Perform other regulatory duties as required.


I ā koe - About You

We are seeking a candidate who possesses the ability to interpret legislation and has experience in handling animals, particularly dogs and livestock. The ideal candidate should be capable of negotiating out of aggressive and confrontational situations and have a proven track record of interacting successfully with the general public.

We value excellent team players who can also work unsupervised and are physically fit. A current driver's license is required, and while a current First Aid certification is preferred, it is not compulsory. Strong report and correspondence writing skills are essential, along with a desire to achieve the best outcomes for our community.

We are looking for someone with a progressive mindset focused on continual improvement and the ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
