Mō te tūnga | About the role

We currently have an exciting opportunity to manage the operational activity of He Aranga Ake, New Zealand’s violent extremism disengagement framework.
He Aranga Ake is a deliverable under New Zealand’s ‘Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism National Strategy’. He Aranga Ake is a multi-agency disengagement framework involving Oranga Tamariki, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Department of Corrections, New Zealand Police, and New Zealand Security Intelligence Service. New Zealand Police are currently the lead agency for this framework and are responsible for effective management, delivery, and support of this capability.

The He Aranga Ake team is a small but highly motivated one with responsibility for the development, implementation, and enduring management of individualised intervention plans for the framework participants. You will need to have excellent relationship management skills, the ability to work in a dynamic and complex environment, proven experience in risk management and leading through influence. You will have exemplary communication skills (both written and verbal).

You will chair the He Aranga Ake National Coordination Group and be responsible for regularly briefing the strategic governance group.


You will provide a constructive and supportive environment which enables key partners to work as part of an effective multi-agency team. To achieve this, you are expected to have strong relationships with government organisations, be able to build wider strategic partnerships and be able to share operational learnings with those working in disengagement both nationally and internationally. The role will influence positive change both within the immediate team and across all key stakeholders.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead the ongoing delivery of ‘He Aranga Ake’
  • Embed consistent operational practices and processes
  • Lead collaborative engagement with partners and stakeholders - including government departments and service providers (including NGO’s)
  • Lead and grow He Aranga Ake capability to identify and respond appropriately to both participant, and team, needs
  • Identify opportunities to improve service delivery
  • Lead positively and with influence in a high performance environment
  • Demonstrate Whakaako: Educating and growing our people to deliver the best service

The role is based at Police National Headquarters - Wellington
Some travel may be required

The minimum criteria for this level of national security clearance is:

  • NZ Citizen who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or:
  • A Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or
  • A citizen of or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, or United States of America, and has a background that can be verified by the NZSIS.

Utu ā-tau | Salary



This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $140,024 and $144,691 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
