Job Description
Our Road Science business is New Zealand’s leading designer and supplier of bitumen and bitumen-based products for the civil contracting industry. With seven world-class manufacturing plants and storage facilities throughout New Zealand, we produce and supply a range of products from traditional offering such as bitumen, bitumen-emulsions and polymer modified right through to bespoke client specific solutions.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Asphalt Production Quality Engineer to join our dedicated and busy team in Penrose where you will act as the glue between all seven manufacturing plants, ensuring high-quality and compliance.
Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity
As Asphalt Production Quality Engineer, you will take ownership of the data processing and administrative duties. Reporting to the Technicial Manager, you will maintain and manage quality systems and processes and be the liaison with key internal and external stakeholders. Ultimately, you will ensure that Downer’s Asphalt Production business manufactures and supplies quality controlled products to meet customer, client and national specifications and best practices.
Day to day duties will include:
- Preparing Job Mix formular (JMF) submittals
- Receipting test reports across all 7 plants, updating test databases and control charts, reporting any results of concern to Regional Production Managers
- Monitoring of Control Charts across all 7 plants, forewarning Regional Production Managers of mixes that are trending towards non-compliance
- Plant Blend Management, providing updated blends to Regional Plant Managers when required
- Collating raw material Source Properties (Bitumen and Aggregate) for JMF submittals
- Collating raw material production properties for routine quality control purposes as well as quality assurance submissions and to assist with blend management

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated leadership behaviours with the ability to influence and manage both internal and external operators, customers and suppliers. We’d also value:
- A keen eye for detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret data and make recommendations
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerBi, Word and SharePoint etc.), and ability to learn and navigate internal systems easily
- Ability to function in a high-volume environment
- A background in laboratory testing and/or asphalt would be advantageous however we will provide on-the-job training for the right person!
