Job Description
Our client is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and trusted retailers, known for delivering quality, value, and fashion-forward products to Kiwi families. As the business sharpens its focus on modernising and elevating its merchandise strategy, they are seeking two experienced Merchandise Managers:
- One to lead Womenswear
- One to lead Menswear and Childrenswear
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Head of Merchandise, these roles offer a blend of strategy, leadership, and hands-on execution. You’ll oversee end-to-end merchandise planning across large and complex categories, guide the vision, leading buyer teams, and ensure commercial success across private-label and international brands.
You’ll collaborate closely with sourcing, QA, planning, design, and supply chain teams to deliver cohesive, profitable ranges. Regular international travel will be part of the role, including visits to suppliers and global markets.
What You’ll Be Doing
You will manage and grow buyer teams, set the seasonal direction, interpret trends, manage trading performance, and optimise assortment decisions. Bringing a fresh perspective, you will question the status quo and act as a change agent within a fast-paced retail business.
Balancing creativity with strong commercial judgement, you will deliver on key KPIs, including margin, stock turn, and markdowns. You will partner with internal teams to ensure seamless execution, manage senior stakeholders, and back your decisions with insight and data.
Supporting product development and supplier partnerships through regular overseas travel, you will engage in activities such as sourcing raw materials, negotiating with suppliers, and managing inventory to ensure products move efficiently from manufacturers to retailers.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for confident leaders who combine fashion instinct with commercial acumen and thrive in complex, high-impact roles.
- Senior experience in merchandising or buying leadership, ideally within a department store, apparel, or multi-category retail environment.
- Proven ability to lead, inspire, and develop buyer teams, with a focus on collaboration and high performance.
- Strong background in range planning, trend interpretation, and in-season trading.
- A deep understanding of private label and branded fashion, including category development and supplier relationships.
- Resilience, agility, and confidence to influence across all levels, including senior stakeholders and complex team environments.
- A strong sense of style and detail, with a passion for product and customer.
These roles are an opportunity to make a significant impact at a much-loved New Zealand brand. You’ll be part of a business that values innovation, empowers its people, and is ready to take its product offering to the next level.
