Job Description

  • Be part of a close-knit team
  • Make a visible difference to our city
  • Fulltime, permanent role

Kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō | Working together for Wellington's future.
Wellington has large scale ambitions for what the capital city will look and feel like for future generations - an inclusive city for all, that celebrates its creative spirit and is environmentally and economically sustainable.

The next few years will see Wellington transition to this state as we invest into the core infrastructure of the city. Whether it be property development and building safe affordable housing, investing into our three waters infrastructure, or changing the look, feel and operation of our city streets - infrastructure will be the beating heart of what drives Wellingtons transition into the future.

If you are looking for an opportunity to use your transport engineering skills towards making Pōneke a better place for generations to come, then look no further.

Our Transport team is a group of passionate people working to improve the lives of Wellingtonians. By strategically enhancing Wellington's roading network, the team works hard to increase road user safety, promote sustainable transport, increase travel efficiency, and improve access for all road users.

We now have an opportunity for a Transport Engineer at an intermediate level to join our team and make a real contribution to Wellington's transport network. In this role, you will be responsible for applying your transport engineering expertise to a variety of transport related projects and will also take a leading role as required.

You will be an excellent collaborator who can work across multiple units including within other transport, and city planning teams on transport related matters to reach a shared outcome that contribute to an efficient network for our communities. You will also be involved in consultation with the community related to transport engineering scheme.

This is a great chance to work on and gain experience within some really challenging and exciting projects. We'd love you to bring your transport engineering skills and expertise in the areas of traffic management, safety improvements, parking management, capacity improvements and the development of work processes to enhance these services.

You will be an excellent team player who can confidently take on projects and contracts with limited supervision. We need someone who can put on a customer lens behind every decision and outcome that is made along with a Tertiary level engineering qualification in BE (Civil) or NZCE (Civil) with proven experience in transport engineering or similar profession.

What's in it for you?
This truly is a job where you'll be able to come in and make lasting improvements, we don't want to do things the same way just for the sake of it.

You'll also be able to see the impact of your work every-time you head out an about in Pōneke - there aren't many roles which offer that.

Why us?
Working for the Council offers you a range of benefits including 5 weeks annual leave, flexible working options, health and wellbeing support, Council staff discounts and a range of learning and development programmes and opportunities.

More than that - you'll be playing a part in making Pōneke an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play.

So, if joining a team that is focussed on delivering the best outcomes for the city now and into the future (while also having a ton of fun doing it) seems like something that you want to be part of, apply today!

Applications close 13th of February 2025. All applications need to be submitted online and have the current right to work in New Zealand. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Ministry of Justice check as part of the preemployment process.

Please note, we will be shortlisting and inviting applicants to interview prior to the closing date. The advertisement may be closed earlier if a suitable applicant is identified.

We want to make sure any accessibility requirements you may have, are well supported so the selection process is equitable for everyone. Please let us know if there are any adjustments or support, we can offer to make our process more accessible to you by emailing: recruitment@wcc.govt.nz
