Job Description
About Shopify
Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $1 trillion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.
This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.
About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.
Before you apply, consider if you can:
- Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
- Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
- Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
- Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
- Bring critical thought and opinion
- Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
- Work digital-first for your daily work
About the role
Shopify provides merchants with a comprehensive suite of marketing and advertising tools designed to help businesses find and engage customers across multiple channels. The platform enables sellers to reach potential buyers through social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, as well as major marketplaces. Key features include Shop Campaigns for risk-free advertising, Shopify Audiences for targeted customer acquisition, and tools for optimizing ad performance and marketing strategies, all accessible from a centralized platform.
The opportunity to increase the scale and scope of these offerings, expanding into new forms of on platform and off platform advertising is vast. We’re on the lookout for an experienced data leader to lead the teams that develop these products, and to help shape the roadmap for Advertising products at Shopify. You’ll lead a team of talented data scientists and machine learning engineers as they build features that enable merchants to drive sales and scale their business to the next level.
What you will do:
- Leading teams of Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and Data Engineers to produce outcomes that align with Shopify's product vision and strategic plan.
- Partner with cross-functional RnD leads and own the outcomes for the product and this business. As part of this role, you'll be responsible for ensuring the end-to-end business is successful.
- Develop and implement data science strategies specifically for ad measurement, targeting, and optimization.
- Oversee the development of predictive models for ad placement, pricing, and performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers and software engineers, to align ad features with the needs of merchants and their buyers.
- Create and maintain dashboards for ad performance metrics, including ACOS (Advertising Cost of Sales) and attention metrics.
- Drive innovation in ad technology, such as leveraging Generative AI for ad content creation and optimization
Qualifications:
- Organizational development – You’ll need a demonstrated track record of building and leading best-in-class data organizations (comprising data science and machine learning engineering teams).
- Comprehensive expertise in digital advertising ecosystems, with the ability to translate complex ad performance data into actionable insights that drive measurable improvements in ad effectiveness and efficiency.
- Data Experience at scale – You’ve been a leader in multiple tech companies where analytics on top of massive data sets drives product/business decisions and results in powerful data products.
- A career path that may have included both large process-rich organizations and smaller, fast-moving companies. The ideal candidate will have been successful in both settings and can meld the best of large and lean.
- Outstanding communications and presentation skills. Has the experience and ability to communicate and influence C-level executives. Has a thick skin and candid communication style.
- Passionate about business strategy – You’ve experienced and thrived in similar channel-related environments and have a knack for working with business users that are responsible for top-line growth.
- Product mindset – You have a product gene that enables you to get to the root of problems faced by customers and users and to create data solutions to solve these challenges.
- Well-balanced skills – People have trouble pinning you down. Both business and technical teams claim you as their own. You are equal parts technical and functional (and both are exceptionally strong), and you are equally comfortable and effective at presenting to technical or business leaders.
It would be great if you have previous experience with:

- Large-scale data-platform tools -
- Machine Learning: Tensorflow, Scikit-Learn
- Data Storage and Access: HDFS, Presto
