About Caliber

We are Caliber Design, an engineering consulting firm with a truly unique business model.

Our clients come to us when they need extra mechanical engineering resource to get their projects completed. Our engineers work as part of their team, on their site, under their guidance.

For our clients, this model gives them a unique level of flexibility and control to turn on/off the resource when they need it.

For our engineers, it offers an opportunity to work across multiple teams, companies, products, and industries and gain a lot of experience in a short period of time … while having the benefit of Caliber operating procedures, technical and pastoral support, learning and development, and camaraderie! The onsite nature of our business model is important; however work does tend to be flexible and hybrid arrangements are common.

We currently have offices in Auckland, Christchurch, Waikato, and Nelson. We’ve worked with over 200 businesses throughout NZ, including HamiltonJet, Fabrum, Synlait, Fisher & Paykel, and Cavotec. Have a look on our website to see the vast range of projects we have worked on.

With over 60 engineers across New Zealand, we have a unique knowledge base and support system of like-minded individuals who enjoy sharing their knowledge and learning from each other.

The Opportunity

We are very excited to be setting up an office in Invercargill. We have existing clients down there and we are ready to really invest in the region. We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to kick things off. This is a role with huge scope for development. Ideally, you’ll have ~5 years industry experience, including project engineering and heavy industry.

In this role, you’ll provide our clients with mechanical and project engineering advice, expertise, and support in executing their projects. Communicating well with the client and other stakeholders, working to tight deadlines and prioritising your work will be important parts of your daily work as you assist your client to ensure their project is running on time and within budget. Projects last on average 3-6 months at a time, so it’s important that you are comfortable with change and slotting into new environments.

While you will be embedded in your client’s organisation, you will still be connected to your Caliber colleagues with team building activities, learning & development opportunities, and drinks catch ups. You will also have regular on-line meetings with your Technical Lead to support you in your project and development at Caliber.

About You

Caliber employs experienced mechanical engineers who have a high-level written and verbal communication ability.

You will have:

  • A minimum Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of 5-6 years machine design experience
  • Project engineering experience across a variety of industries
  • Solid commercial experience in mechanical design
  • Proficient in CAD packages; particularly SolidWorks and Inventor
  • Well versed in FEA and calculations
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Please note that this role is not suitable for a graduate. However, if you are a graduate and would like to register your interest and keep in contact with us while you build up your skill base, please email our HR Manager, nicky.deller@caliberdesign.co.nz

Remuneration & Benefits

When you join Caliber as a Mechanical Engineer, you will earn an attractive hourly rate, plus overtime, KiwiSaver, and these other great benefits:

  • Accommodation! We will help arrange accommodation for you in Invercargill and even pay your rent for the first 6 months!
  • Learning & Development - Participation in our structured learning & development program, which provides a pathway for engineers to evolve from great engineers into world-class engineers.
  • Great overtime - essentially earn time and a half for every hour over 40 that you work per week, which means you can earn significantly more than market rates.
  • Team culture - work for an organisation that looks after its people, lives its values, and fosters collaboration and connection.
  • Health benefits - medical, life and total and permanent disability insurance after 6 months employment as well as access to our employee assistance program.
