About the role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

The Senior Analyst Inshore Fisheries position supports the development, delivery, and management of New Zealand's fisheries management regime. It provides advice to Government ministers and decision makers, as well as engages with Māori and stakeholders to ensure the sustainable use of New Zealand's fisheries resources.

This is a varied role, where you will be expected to:

  • Support the development and implementation of strategies and regulatory tools for sustainable management of inshore fisheries
  • Undertake meaningful engagement with tangata whenua, stakeholders, and Government agencies to inform advice and regulation.
  • Work with a diverse range of sector stakeholders and technical experts to monitor and advance regional and national fisheries management initiatives
  • Translate fisheries data into helpful insights for management
  • Present well-analysed, clear and accurate advice and guidance
  • Support the implementation of key regional workstreams such as Revitalising the Gulf: Government Action on the Sea Change Plan, the Government's response strategy to the Sea Change Tai Timu Tai Pari Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan.


About You - Mōu

We are looking for someone who is passionate about fisheries and the marine environment, with a policy and regulatory focused skill-set. You do not necessarily need to be from a central Government background, you could be working with iwi and hapu on fisheries related initiatives, be part of a fishing sector advocacy group, an ENGO, or have experience in local Government. We are looking for someone who can effectively combine their passion, knowledge and relevant skillsets.Some key elements of your experience that would be desirable are:

  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an ability to apply Māori knowledge and values to your work
  • Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline(s). Preferred areas of study include marine or environmental sciences, resource management, law, policy, or economics
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, listening, and written)
  • Knowledge of fisheries management and regulatory frameworks
  • Understanding of Government processes including Parliamentary processes
  • Data analysis skills and the capacity to quickly and clearly define an issue
  • Experience establishing and effectively maintaining collaborative relationships

About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū

Our regional team of ten are spread across the north of the North Island, based in Whangarei, Auckland and Tauranga. We are a supportive and diverse group that sit within the wider national Fisheries Management Directorate. The team have a variety of backgrounds including education and research, local government, monitoring and enforcement, international fisheries, and permitting and consents. We have a good mix of technical and academic minds, plus a practical hands-on approach, as needed. You'll report to the Manager Inshore Fisheries - North, who supports his team with a very high trust model of leadership.

Low level Security Clearance

most preferably a New Zealand citizen, who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last five (5) years, OR
is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
