Job Description

The Far North District Council is seeking a Pouāwhina Manukura (Executive Assistant) to support the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. In this pivotal role, you will be at the heart of our leadership team, ensuring smooth operations and effective communication. Your expertise will help drive our community-focused initiatives and support the strategic goals of our district.

Te Wero – The Challenge

Our Kahika and Kowhai are seeking an exceptional individual to support them.

You will build a strong, trust-based relationship to:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Mayoral office, including complex diary management, host management, internal and external communications, and coordinating catering/hospitality services and travel arrangements.
  • Organise meetings and workshops, including communications, planning, and logistics.
  • Oversee funding applications submitted to the Mayor.
  • Coordinate stakeholder information in collaboration with the Executive Office.
  • Anticipate the needs of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to ensure they are well-prepared and organised.

Āu Kōrero - About You

This role is ideal for someone who is self-aware, intuitive, an excellent communicator, and meticulous in planning and execution. Proficiency in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga is essential for managing communications that may be in Te Reo Māori.

To succeed in this role, you need to be agile, intelligent, and bold in your approach. You will manage the Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s time effectively and possess the ability to push back diplomatically. Exceptional negotiation skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks are crucial. You must anticipate issues before they arise and address them proactively.

You will also need:

  • Discretion, understanding the relationship between operations and governance in a complex political environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build connections and handle interactions with people from all walks of life.
  • Experience in supporting executive-level management roles, or the right attitude and skills to thrive in this busy role.
  • A great sense of humor!
