Job Description

The opportunity

Downer’s Engineering Services team is seeking a talented CAD Designer to support the delivery of essential water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects across New Zealand and Australia. This role is a key part of our Energy & Utilities business unit and will ideally be based at our Nelson office in the Tasman region. You'll be joining a small, supportive team passionate about continuously improving our CAD systems and the quality of our design outputs.

Please note, we are open to candidates based in Nelson, Christchurch or Sydney.

What you’ll do

  • Produce and manage high-quality 2D/3D CAD designs, digital models, construction drawings and as-builts for a range of utilities infrastructure projects.
  • Develop pipe network models, plan and long section drawings, in alignment with relevant industry and company standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project delivery.

What we offer

  • Competitive Total Remuneration Package + Downer employee benefits.
  • Flexibility to work from home on a case-by-case basis, subject to operational needs.
  • A small, supportive team environment that values collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement of our CAD systems and design outcomes.
  • A supportive, inclusive culture that values diversity and collaboration.
  • Internal mobility pathways and professional development opportunities within a Tier 1 ASX-listed company. We invest in our people and are industry leading in this regard.
  • The opportunity to work across a wide range of technically challenging and socially meaningful infrastructure projects.

What we’re looking for

You’re a motivated designer with a passion for infrastructure and an eye for detail. You thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to contribute to innovative solutions in the utilities sector. Ideally, you will bring:

  • A Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Experience in civil design, particularly within water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D.
  • Familiarity with GIS platforms, point cloud data, and survey integration.
  • An understanding of relevant New Zealand and Australian utility standards is advantageous.
  • A positive, adaptable attitude and a willingness to continue learning and developing your skills.
