Te Tari Pūreke is Aotearoa New Zealand’s Firearms Regulator. Our Vision is to ensure the possession and use of firearms in Aotearoa is the safest in the world.
To achieve this, Te Tari Pūreke delivers four core functions: effectively implementing the firearms licensing systems; managing the Firearms Registry; educating people to enable compliance with their legislative responsibilities; and promoting the safe possession and use of legitimate firearms.

About the role
The Firearms Safety Supervisor is part of the Partnerships and Communities Directorate.
The Partnerships and Communities Directorate is a significant enabler to achieving firearms safety outcomes for New Zealand. We have a comprehensive network of strategic, central, and community-based relationships within our spectrum of engagement enabling individual and collective effort opportunities to be realised.
The Partnerships Directorate work across the regulator (Te Tari Pūreke), regulated parties (firearms licence holders), stakeholders, and communities to ensure we effectively understand risks and opportunities to improve safety outcomes. The Directorate develops and delivers training and community education initiatives. This is achieved through effective engagement, insights, and intelligence to prioritise and align engagement approaches and deliverables.
The successful applicant will be required to travel for the purposes of training delivery, community engagement, and undertaking other regulatory compliance activities. Working four 10-hour shifts per week, the successful applicant will predominately work between 7am-5pm but can at times will have starts as early as 6am and finishes at 10pm. Working every second Saturday is part of the roster cycle.
Key Deliverables:
- Leading and managing a geographically dispersed team.
- Ability to connect and engage with a wide cross section of New Zealand communities.
- Deliver firearms safety training courses, information and education to firearms licence applicants and existing firearms licence holders.
- Deliver firearms safety information and education to individuals and communities that are not firearms licence holders.
- Deliver firearms safe handling training to Te Tari Pūreke staff, and other police groups if required.
- Work closely with partners such as Fish and Game, Department of Conservation, Game Animal Council.
- Support stakeholder firearms community groups with firearms safety initiatives and activities.
- Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the Arms Act and the Arms Regulations.
- As part of the wider Partnerships Directorate deliver or support the delivery of other engagement and education activities.
- Support the delivery of other regulatory activities including visits with firearms dealers, and licence holders.
- Uphold and model the core values.

We as the regulator, collaborate closely with both the Ministry of Justice and NZ Police. The Ministry of Justice is responsible for policy advice and system oversight and NZ Police is responsible for law enforcement function, and through Te Tari Pūreke delivers all regulatory functions.

Special requirements
- Holds and can maintain a current NZ Firearms Licence and a NZ driver licence.
- Experience in Adult learning/education.
- Confident public speaker.

Salary
This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence at Salary $102,808
