Job Description

Come and join WCC's Building Compliance and Consents team as a Consenting Officer!

Be part of a diverse and inclusive team that ensures that buildings in Wellington are safe. You will join a group of passionate and engaged professionals who will support your learning and growth in the role. No two days are the same in consenting, you'll be working on anything from small internal alterations to large scale developments and high-rise buildings. Day to day tasks include reviewing building documents including plans, requesting further information and reviewing responses to ensure the building work is compliant with the Building Act 2004.

We are strongly customer focused while upholding the requirements of the Building Act 2004 and the NZ Building Codes. We collaborate when needed with a wide variety of teams from across council and enjoy engaging in insightful discussion to come to collective decisions.

We offer in-house training and have external agencies share their expertise as well as potential exciting opportunities to join working groups to provide advice as part of government consultations relating to consenting. You'll have a supportive management team who are committed to the personal growth and development of staff and ensuring positive team culture.

So, who are we looking for?
To be successful, you will bring the following.

  • It is essential to have a Regulation 18 qualification - See here
  • The ability to explain complex technical information and interpret building code and building legislation.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills enabling effective decision-making and risk mitigation.
  • A flexible, can-do attitude, passion and empathy for the needs of both customers and the city.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • A strong sense of commitment, a willingness to learn, and a desire to work in a dynamic deadline driven environment.


About the City Consenting and Compliance (CCC) Team
Embedded within the City Consenting and Compliance (CCC) unit, the Building Compliance and Consents team help shape Wellington's skyline through involvement with all building projects and developments in Wellington City. We support the Wellington community with building compliance as it grows places to work, live and play. Working with homeowners, designers, consultants, builders and other industry leaders, this is a place where things are happening - and there's never been a busier time in the building industry than now.

We are looking to appoint between $85,645 - $100,758 per annum, for this role, depending on relevant skills and experience.
