Job Description
THE OPPORTUNITY:
As a desk editor you would work alongside other editors to assist with making decisions and delegating assignments and responsibilities across the reporting team.
A key part of the role is to help facilitate and roll out breaking news coverage. You’ll have the ability to drive daily news content from start to finish, based on audience wants and needs. You’ll need sound news judgement, the ability to think laterally and creatively, and to easily identify what our audience sees as valuable. You will be a people leader.
You will take responsibility for allocating adequate resource, ensuring that assignments and briefs are clear, and communication is effective.
HOW YOU'LL DO IT:
- High-level reporting, writing, and editing skills and be fully accountable for what is published.
- Show outstanding news judgement and lead, coach and inspire your team to generate unique, compelling content of a high standard.
- Cover shifts on the NZ Herald newsdesk, managing breaking news, deploying resources effectively.
- Lead the news agenda in your specialty area.
- Maintain a strong network of contacts and story sources, together with good local knowledge and a wide awareness of news and current affairs.
- Edit and sub content to ensure it is engaging, professionally presented, balanced and errorfree.
- Use data to gain audience insight and apply that when necessary to developing stories. Share this data with your team to increase their understanding.
- Work quickly and efficiently, managing time and prioritising to meet all deadlines.
- Show resilience and can cope with pressure, sudden change, high workload, and challenges.
- Identify how stories can be work across video and audio platforms and actively work with teams to ensure they are producing stories for all appropriate platforms.
- Manage reporters’ time so effort and resource match audience demand/interest.
- Possess excellent judgment to responsibly assess and mitigate risks.
- Use new tools to augment your teams’ newsgathering, journalism, and storytelling.
- Great planning skills.
- Ability to solve complex problems, manage complaints and address performance issues.
ABOUT YOU:
- Relevant qualification and/or significant experience in a senior newsroom role
- Skilled at covering stories on a wide variety of topics.
- Comfortable in print, digital and broadcasting environments.
- Proven track record of effective and positive people-leadership abilities.
- Foster a high-performing culture and respect others’ views, contributing positively to NZME as a whole.
