Wellington City Council is on track to deliver the most ambitious capital works programme our city has ever seen. The Infrastructure & Delivery group is central to much of this mahi.
Sitting within this is our Transport and Infrastructure team, who play a key role in delivering critical engineering and infrastructure services to keep Pōneke up and moving. This team plan and deliver the maintenance and renewal works on our transport and infrastructure assets as well as controlling the city's network of traffic signals. They construct and deliver minor improvements and safety projects as well as the larger Transport-related projects whilst also holding the Council's regulatory role as the Road Controlling Authority.
Āu ake mahi | What you'll do
As the Traffic Engineer - ITS in our Traffic Operations team, you'll make a real contribution to Wellington's transport network and physically see the positive contributions your mahi will have on Pōneke.
You will play a key role in supporting the team to ensure that our traffic signals, SCATS, and ITS assets are maintained, managed, and operated. This includes investigation, design, works coordination, audit of completed works, and processing claims and payments.
Providing support to other Traffic Signals Engineers in aspects of signal, SCATS, and ITS works, you will also play your part in supporting with traffic monitoring during peak traffic times and for special events.
Working closely with various stakeholders, you will help develop and enhance transport network services throughout Pōneke by,
- Providing input into the annual plan process for funding approval of signals and ITS programmes and projects.
- Contribute to the investigation and provide advice on issues related to signals, ITS, and SCATS.
- Contribute to the development of the Infrastructure and Delivery Programme in signals, SCATS, and ITS.
- Manage signal and ITS contracts to ensure the work is completed on time, to budget and quality standards.
- Establish and maintain effective and cooperative internal and external relationships with stakeholders to ensure a fully integrated service is provided.
- Ensure sound technical advice is provided on traffic signal engineering matters and provide technical advice within the area of expertise to Council staff on traffic engineering and management of signals, ITS, and SCATS.
Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience
This role will require you to support project activities relating to signals and ITS programmes, a sound understanding of good practice project management principles is required while ensuring reporting requirements are met and project risks are fully understood and monitored, robust and transparent procurements processes are undertaken and adhering to budget and scheduling expectations.
A tertiary qualification, e.g. BE (Civil) or NZCE (Civil) is desirable along with relevant industry experience in Traffic Engineering and Traffic Management experience and a full drivers license will be required. Along with this, you would ideally demonstrate knowledge of and experience in:
- Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge in NZ Legislation pertinent to Local Government e.g. Land Transport Act, Traffic Control Devices Rule, Road User Rule.
- Knowledge of traffic management and engineering.
- Project and Contract Management experience.
- In terms of soft skills, we need someone who knows how to build and maintain effective, lasting, and cooperative working relationships with great written and verbal communication skills. You'll be joining a supportive team that is motivated, has great passion for the mahi they deliver on, and an ambitious mindset to get things done.
This position will be required to work outside normal working hours to monitor and manage events in the city as required and be available to respond to emergencies affecting the roading and traffic assets and the transport network safety and operations, such as storm or flood damage, slips, accidental or earthquake damage.
