Job Description

Kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō: Working together for Wellington's future
We're Working for Wellington. Wellington City Council's team provides more than 400 services every day for Wellingtonians - everything from parks and pools to consents and cemeteries - playing our part in making Pōneke the creative capital where people and nature thrive.

Our Finance team is the engine room of the council. Our city has an ambitious Long-Term Plan which will see us deliver over $1billion of Capital Expenditure in the next three years and continue that investment trend to deliver over $3billion in the coming decade, all this while providing the people of Wellington City with hundreds different services on a daily basis. It's an exciting time to be part of the team.

Due to an internal promotion, we're looking for a Principal Advisor Financial Policy, responsible for the development of high-quality financial policies enabling Wellington City Council to meet its objectives.

In this new role you'll:

  • Develop, implement and monitor funding and financial policies to ensure compliance and best practice
  • Provide thought leadership and expert advice and analysis on the pricing of Wellington City Council services
  • Develop and maintain Council's financial models to support policy reviews, annual and long-term planning
  • Manage the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive, integrated long-term rating and rates fund policy
  • You'll also work alongside managers to lift the financial capability of the Council, coaching and educating employees.

You'll have significant experience in a senior policy role within a large, complex environment - and preferably have some knowledge on the workings of local government. We're looking for you to bring highly developed conceptual and analytical skills; you will be able to implement workable solutions to ambiguous problems.

You will have a proven ability to lead complex policy development/implementation programmes, and be able to operate at a strategic level. Strong communication and relationship management skills are also key.

This is a great opportunity, not only with regard to the work you will be doing, but also the team you'll be working with. The manager for this role believes in facilitative leadership. He encourages growth and development, and there is a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to learn from here.

Applications close 18 February 2025. All applications must be submitted online, and applicants must have the current right to work in New Zealand.
