Data Engineer
We have multiple opportunities for experienced Data Engineers (at various levels of experience) to join our Data and Analytics Platforms domain within BNZ Technology.
You will be responsible for the design, development, testing and support of application software and systems that provide timely, accurate, and meaningful enterprise data to internal customers so they can effectively analyse business patterns and trends and make informed decisions.

What are some tasks the successful candidate in this role will complete?
Software Development Life-cycle:
- Design and build software applications.
- Design and build ETL pipelines.
- Follow ‘best practice’ software design, development and change management disciplines to ensure robustness, scalability, security and fitness for purpose for applications.
- Participate in design/code reviews as required.
- Deliver high quality technical documentation.
- Perform rigorous unit testing and assist with system testing as required
Continuous improvement and Operational excellence:
- Provide proactive ownership and timely resolution of production support issues Provide non-business support in accordance with defined support models.
- Maintain and enhance the quality of meta-data
- Proactively seek ways to improve the efficiency, supportability and cost of existing systems
- Complete accurate timesheets as required
Applicants at the Senior level could also expect to lead design and code reviews and mentor other team members, lead technical discussions with external parties and assist Business Analysts (BAs) and other specialists in BNZ with clarification on requirements, design and approach.

Our agile ways of working makes day to day work exciting and gives us time to work on our craft as Data Engineers, whilst delivering brilliantly on our customer outcomes. We are continuously looking at ways to innovate and make our environment better to operate in. What this means is that you will be involved in sprints, retrospectives, innovation days / hackathons, Demos / Showcases, potlucks and bookclubs.
What technical skills are required for this role?
We are looking for individuals who have an understanding of software development processes and platform architecture, and have experience working with or supporting data analytics workloads. You will also bring:
- Strong hands-on expertise one or more of these products: Oracle BI Suite, MS BI Suite, Mainframe/PC SAS, COBOL, JCL, DB2 or SAP.
- Experience in agile practices, including sprint planning and user story development. Experience working in an Agile and DevOps environment.
- Proven success in aligning with and managing expectations of key stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks relevant to New Zealand banking, especially BS11 and IFRS 9.
