The Riddet Institute is a world-best New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence in food and nutritional sciences, providing fundamental scientific understanding and training for a new generation of science leaders.  The Institute brings together scientists across disciplines and organisations, providing a “NZ Inc” approach to food science research, and it generates knowledge and capability that transforms the New Zealand food sector.

The Sustainable Nutrition Initiative (SNi®), part of the Riddet Institute, is a dynamic and multi-skilled team committed to transforming evidence-based nutrition research into practical solutions for enhancing global sustainable nutrition. With extensive international experience, our team comprises leading food scientists, nutrition scientists, and mathematical modellers, all working together to drive impactful change.

This full-time (37.5 hours per week) position is fixed term for 3 years until September 2028, based at our Manawatū campus in Palmerston North.

We are seeking a high-achieving researcher with a strong background in computational modelling, data science and scientific communication. The successful applicant will be focussed on modelling the New Zealand food system as part of the Kai anamata mō Aotearoa research programme, using their skills to connect diverse data sets to achieve a holistic view of sustainable food systems.

The successful candidate will have:

• A PhD in a subject involving computational modelling or data science.
• Commitment to model development and scientific communication.
• Interest in sustainability and nutrition will be advantageous.
• Effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• The ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with R and the building of R shiny applications would be advantageous.

This position is appointable across the Research Officer and Postdoctoral Fellow range, with a salary commensurate with skills and experience.

Research Officer: $81,172 - $103,595 (2024 range)
Postdoctoral Fellow: $81,172 - $97,988 (2024 range)
