The Mid-Career Plateau: How to Level Up and Keep Growing

Kevin Ford

So, you've made it past the entry-level hustle, climbed a few rungs on the corporate ladder, and now you're... stuck? Welcome to the mid-career plateau. It happens to the best of us but the good news is you don’t have to stay there.

The Mid-Career Slump is Real (And Data Confirms It)

A study by the Harvard Business Review found that mid-career professionals often experience a performance dip and reduced motivation between 10-15 years into their careers. Another report by McKinsey & Company shows that professionals in their 30s and 40s feel stagnant because promotions slow down, skill gaps widen, and job satisfaction declines.

In New Zealand, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment projects that employment will grow by 1.4% annually, adding approximately 39,400 workers each year up to 2028. Industries such as Business Services, Retail Trade, Accommodation, and Food Services are expected to see significant growth.

1. Identify What’s Holding You Back

Before you can level up, pinpoint what’s keeping you in place. Is it a lack of challenge, a skills gap, or limited growth opportunities? Here’s how to tell:

  • Feeling uninspired? You might need new responsibilities or a shift in your role.
  • Not being promoted? A missing skill or strategic networking could be the issue.
  • Stagnant salary? It may be time to negotiate or explore new job markets.

2. Upskill to Stay Competitive

Skills that got you here won’t necessarily take you further. A LinkedIn Learning Report found that 74% of hiring managers say mid-career professionals need to upskill to remain competitive. Focus on:

  • Leadership & Management: Even if you're not a manager yet, leadership skills are critical.
  • Digital Fluency: AI, data analytics, and automation are shaping the future of work.
  • Industry Certifications: Gain credibility with relevant credentials, such as those offered by NZ Institute of Management & Leadership.

3. Network With Purpose

A strong network is your career’s best accelerator. Research by MIT Sloan suggests that mid-career professionals who actively network have a 50% higher chance of securing promotions or new opportunities.

  • Join industry groups and professional organizations, such as Engineering New Zealand.
  • Attend conferences, webinars, and LinkedIn networking events.
  • Engage in mentorship - either as a mentor or mentee.

4. Make Yourself Visible

A common mistake? Flying under the radar. Ensure people know your value:

  • Advocate for high-impact projects that showcase leadership.
  • Communicate your wins - document achievements and share results.
  • Leverage LinkedIn - post industry insights and share professional accomplishments.

5. Consider a Career Pivot

Sometimes, leveling up means shifting gears entirely. According to Gartner, 58% of mid-career professionals switch industries or job functions to accelerate growth. If your field has limited upward mobility, consider an adjacent role or industry where your skills transfer well.

6. Take Control of Your Career Trajectory

Your employer isn't responsible for your career growth - you are. Proactively seek opportunities, invest in yourself, and don’t settle for stagnation.
