Te Wero – The Challenge

The Senior Road Safety & Traffic Engineer will set the strategic direction for the development of transport safety for the far north, including roading, passenger transport, network safety and traffic planning and input into policies, plans, bylaws and standards and overall prioritised work programme for the Far North District Council. This position reports to the Transportation Services Manager and has two direct reports.

Key responsibilities:

  • Transport Safety Strategy and Planning: Develop and maintain traffic safety policies, strategies, plans, levels of service and standards according to best practice.
  • Development and administration of district speed management plans and dealing with speed management requests. Managing the districts contribution to the national speed limit register.
  • Road Safety Strategic Programme: Analyse crash data, create strategies, co-design programs with NZTA, write funding applications, and ensure programs are delivered on time, to budget and to quality. This also includes road safety action plans, development engineering input, road safety audits
  • Emissions Reduction Programs: Lead the development of strategies, business cases, program development and funding applications to achieve government targets of 20% reduction by 2034
  • Review of third party proposals for road works or improvements, including undertaking Road Safety Audits
  • Team Leadership: Contribute to and create a positive, high performing team, providing guidance and subject matter expertise
  • Community Engagement: Lead proactive, appropriate engagement and consultation with communities and stakeholders
  • Customer and Community Relations: Manage customer feedback to continually improve service delivery.


I ā koe - About You

We are looking for some who brings:

  • NZCE, Diploma or Degree qualification in engineering, asset management or similar related discipline.
  • 10 years experience in Traffic Engineering, including undertaking road safety audits
  • A minimum of 6 years relevant leadership experience would be beneficial
  • BE, MEngNZ, CPEng would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of road design and construction, maintenance techniques, and engineering principles
  • Experience working in local government or with local government as a supplier or funding agency
  • Conversant with NZ Transport Agency standards, guidelines and funding processes
  • Proven interpersonal skills and able to obtain collaboration and cooperation
  • Well organised with the ability to independently to prioritise and work to deadlines
  • Sound budget management and financial reporting skills
  • Ability to work in a complex work environment, deal with ambiguity and across functions
  • Highly skilled communicator and facilitator with demonstrated experience in building and maintaining effective relationships.
