Job Description
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Join the Gisborne Herald as our new Editor, building and maintaining an agenda-setting team of multimedia journalists. You will lead the team in creating high-quality, accurate, and trustworthy content that engages with local and national readership.
If this is you, your strong people leadership abilities will take this proud masthead into the future, nurturing the print business but also growing the digital news operation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Journalism and editing skills:
- Ensure writing and copy editing is completed to a high-standard.
- Generate story ideas with audience front of mind, demonstrating decisiveness.
- Create a strategic vision for the newsroom.
- Maintain journalism integrity and media law requirements at all times.
People leadership, planning and organizing skills:
- Play a leadership role in the local community and with your team.
- Lead other content leaders to coach and support journalists.
- Manage initiatives and processes relating to culture and performance.
Managing print products:
- Publishing of high-quality newspaper products ensuring journalism standards and deadlines are met.
- Liaise with NZME’s commercial teams to maximise opportunities.
Digital audience-focus:
- Use data to inform editorial decisions, responding to what audiences want.
Community and Commercial:
- Represent the mastheads you lead and NZME, building relationships within the community and clients when required.
- Identify and develop commercial and/or premium content offerings.
ABOUT YOU:
- Significant experience in a newsroom leadership role with proven track record in leading teams.
- A commitment to delivering high-impact, authentic, relentlessly interesting journalism for our audiences.
- Comfortable in multimedia environments – print, digital, audio/radio.
- An established network of contacts, with excellent relationship building skills.
- Strong communication skills, with the abilities to foster a collaborative team environment and a culture of excellence.
- A strategic mindset that aligns with the vision of the wider NZME newsroom division.
